The Flame Breathing ( (ほのお) () (きゅう) Honō no kokyū?) is one of the five main Breathing Styles directly derived from Sun Breathing. The Flame Breathing mimics the burning effect of fire and replicates it with the user's swordsmanship.

The Flame Breathing was developed by a distant ancestor of the Rengoku Family, who was originally a student of Yoriichi Tsugikuni. It can be assumed that this student attempted to master the Sun Breathing but, due to him not being as innately powerful as Yoriichi, his teacher altered his Breathing Style training in order to better focus on his students individual strengths and weaknesses. Eventually, his student continued to develop and train this style until it became its own unique breathing and was subsequently named the Flame Breathing. Since then, this particular Breathing Style has been passed down and taught through generations of his descendants and the future members of the Demon Slayer Corps.[1]

Techniques

  1. First Form: Unknowing Fire ( (いち) (かた) 不知火 (しらぬい) Ichi no kata: Shiranui?)[2] - The swordsman charges towards their opponent at high speed and decapitates them in one or multiple slashes that burns the flesh of their enemy. This technique had enough force to launch train carriages off the tracks a short distance.
  2. Second Form: Rising Scorching Sun ( () (かた) (のぼ) (えん) (てん) Ni no kata: Nobori En Ten?)[3] - The swordsman releases an arching slash attack upwards.
  3. Third Form: Fiery Spirits ( (さん) (かた) () (えん) (ばん) (じょう) San no kata: Kien Banjō?)[4](Movie Exclusive and Temporary Translation) - The swordsman swings their blade downwards in an arc.
  4. Fourth Form: Blooming Flame Undulation ( () (かた) (せい) (えん) のうねり Shi no kata: Sei En no Uneri?)[5] - The swordsman swings their blade in a circular motion that can defend them from all incoming attacks or decapitate multiple enemies at once. Due to this technique being strikingly similar to the Sun Breathing: Burning Bones, Summer Sun it is likely that this techniques was derived from it.
  5. Fifth Form: Flame Tiger ( () (かた) (えん) () Go no kata: Enko?)[6] - The swordsman unleashes a powerful series of sword slashes that takes the form of a flaming tiger that charges towards the enemy at blinding speeds.
  • Ninth Form: Rengoku ( () (かた) (れん) (ごく) Ku no kata: Rengoku?)[7] - The most powerful Flame Breathing technique. A devastating dashing slash that the swordsman initiates from a high stance, the technique had enough power to carve a deep impression that burnt the ground where it was unleashed. Hairo also noted while Kyojuro was using this attack that his sword was able to burn his flesh. In the movie adaptation, this attack takes the form of a titanic flaming dragon with blue eyes that emits blue streaks of electricity from its mouth. After this technique is performed by Kyojuro in the movie, the surroundings were seemingly engulfed in flames, creating a purgatory-like hellscape and a giant whirlwind of heat and fire in the wake of the attack.
